Piano the Builder

By Luis Fernández-Galiano

This selection of texts on Renzo Piano’s life and work begins with a short biography and ends with an extensive conversation held at his home in which the Genoese architect looks back on his many active years. In between is a chronological reprinting of articles from different episodes in his career, which is sometimes contrasted with the approach of other architects. From the Kansai airport and the headquarters of ‘The New York Times’ to museums like the mythical Centre Pompidou that he designed with Richard Rogers and Centro Botín in Santander, Spain, all his buildings evince a combination of technological refinement, love of craftsmanship, and civic sensibility.
