Oloid. Form of the Future

Edited by Tobias Langscheid & Tilo Richter

In 1929, the sculptor, inventor and researcher Paul Schatz (1898–1971) discovered the geometric form of the oloid. Schatz’ lifework was characterised by this fundamentally new body, created by inverting the cube, for which he found ever new and pioneering applications for a number of decades. The sociologist Lucius Burckhardt identified the "highest possibilities of design" in the oloid, which Schatz had "taken, as it were in passing, from his in-depth study of geometric solids." Almost a century later, Oloid brings together the most diverse facets of the form - from geometrical and technical aspects, through artistic and architectural interpretations, to philosophical considerations. Contributions by Tobias Langscheid, Tilo Richter, Oliver Niewiadomski, Lucius Burckhardt, Dirk Böttcher, Matthias Mochner, Felix M. Hediger, Walter Kugler, Andreas Chiquet, Heinrich Frontzek, Christoph Müller, Gerhard Heid, Beate Oberdorfer, Vera Kopppehel & Paul Schatz.
